Seven

Tyler cracked her eyes when she felt Reegan stir against her. The memory of their lovemaking came rushing back. Her eyes flew open, focusing in the darkness. The moon and stars were covered by thick heavy clouds. How long have we been asleep? What time is it? The cool air stung her skin as Reegan peeled herself off of her.

"Hey," Tyler whispered.

"Hi. I'm sorry, did I wake you?"

Tyler's smile quickly faded when she noticed the sadness in Reegan's eyes. "Are you okay?" she questioned.

Reegan felt around the grass next to them, searching for her clothes. Tyler sat up, putting her hand on the brunette's shoulder. "Reegan?"

"Tyler...I'm sorry…I…" She choked back the tears and took a deep breath. "I need to get back."

Tyler's chest burned as the painful realization passed through her. She wasn't sure what to say or do, so she did the next best thing. She stood up, quickly dressed in silence and drove Reegan back to her motor coach. After that, she took a long walk around the property trying to make sense of her evening. Her heart ached and her head pounded. It had been years since she had been serious with anyone and she was too old fashioned to have a one night stand. If Tyler was involved with someone she was looking at forever. The impromptu lovemaking and abrupt dismissal scared her. She feared she'd made a huge mistake.

Tyler had spent the rest of the late night and early morning walking around, unable to sleep. When she finally decided she had no answers and couldn't come up with a rational explanation for Reegan's erratic behavior, she took a shower and dressed for the day. She was in the stables at four a.m. By the time her Uncle Tucker joined her at five, she'd already fed Bucky and Houdini, and was a quarter of the way through her chores for the day.

"What's bothering you, kiddo?" he asked, without looking her way. He knew her moods as if she were his own child.

She took a deep breath and sighed. There was no way she could lie to her uncle. It wasn't in her to lie anyway. Hell, she wasn't even sure if she knew how.

"Come on…spill it. You got at least a half hour before them boys get here," he said, referring to Jake and Rusty as he turned a bucket over and sat down. He began filing the hooves of the smallest mare. Tyler stood nearby, watching him work.

"I think I made a big mistake, Uncle Tucker." She hung her head.

"Well, what did you do?" he asked, looking up at her.

She didn't have to answer him, he could tell by the look on her face. Her beautiful island colored eyes were dark and hollow.

"Hmm…that city girl break your heart?" he questioned as he switched legs on the horse.

She was tougher than this. Why the hell had she been letting it get to her so badly?

"You're strong, Tyler McCain, just like your old man had been. But, you wear your heart on your sleeve just like your momma did.
